The Sonoran Joint Venture will offer a three-day Bird Guide Training Workshop in Alamos, Sonora , Mexico.

Workshop objectives include:

  • Teach the basic criteria for identifying a bird.
  • Teach correct use and care of binoculars and field guides.
  • Teach bird names and other important vocabulary in English.
  • Provide overview of basic bird conservation issues.
  • Introduce theme of ethics in practicing bird observation.
  • Learn how to describe location of a bird in the field.
  • Learn basic group management skills.
  • Provide an example for how a guide should perform/behave.

Who Should Attend?
The workshop is open to any Mexican National with an interest in leading birding and nature programs in his or her community. SJV partners are encouraged to send residents of communities in which they are working.

Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites for participation in this workshop other than a strong interest in ecotourism, enthusiasm for learning new things, and willingness to put new skills to use once participants return home. Participants do not need to have prior experience as a guide. No prior bird identification skills are necessary, although they are helpful.

How Much Does It Cost?
Thanks to the generous support of the U.S. Forest Service International Program, the Sonoran Joint Venture is able to provide full scholarships to all workshop attendees. Scholarships include room and board during the workshop, as well as workshop registration. Some travel assistance is also available for those who demonstrate need.
