Pollinator’s Gardens Inaugurated at Plaza Colibrí of San Lázaro, Sonora
The Sonoran Institute and the San Lázaro Community Conservation Center enjoyed the second San Lázaro River Festival event on 1 May 2004. The Sonoran Joint Venture has supported the Sonoran Institute's work in San Lázaro for the past several years.
The Festival commemorated the new pollinator’s plaza, continued success by the youth birding group Los Halcones, the tremendous work of field coordinator Alfonso Gonzales, and the community participation that has thusfar gone into conservation efforts in the community.
Highlights included the inauguration of the new San Lázaro Plaza Colibrí; a visit to The Green House (a home formerly owned by the Green family before its expropriation by the Mexican government in the mid 1930s) and; a river walk to a 2 km restoration area to showcase the excellent restoration work that is been conducted in this stretch of Santa Cruz River. Local leaders responsible for guiding the project received special awards, and the community participated with folk dances, excellent food and lively music and spirits.
