SJV offers new Resource Awards
The SJV is pleased to announce a new mini-Award program that will provide resources to SJV partners. We currently are offering two different books:
- Guía de campo a las aves de Norteamérica, by Kenn Kaufman
- Birds of the Baja California Peninsula: Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy, by Richard A. Erickson and Steve N.G. Howell, editors.
If you or your program has use for one or multiple copies of either or both of these books, please download and complete the application form in English or Spanish.
At this point the Kaufman guides are reserved for either Mexican biologists, those working in education programs in Mexico, or those working with Spanish-speaking populations in the Arizona or southern California. Please do not request copies of the Kaufman guide for your personal library. We have sufficient copies of the Baja book that you may request individual copies for personal use. Contact Jennie Duberstein with any questions.
Service Designates Critical Habitat for Endangered Southwestern Bird
On 20 October 2005 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a final rule designating 737 miles of waters within the 100-year floodplain in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico as critical habitat for the southwestern willow flycatcher. The designation identifies the stream- and lake-edge habitats that are believed essential to help recover the species.
Many areas identified as eligible for designation were excluded from final critical habitat designation as they are already protected by conservation management plans. There are over sixteen conservation plans already established to provide protections and assurances that the conservation measures for the species will be implemented and effective.
A copy of the final rule, economic analysis, and other information about the southwestern willow flycatcher critical habitat and recovery planning are available at http://arizonaes.fws.gov or by contacting the Field Supervisor at the Arizona Ecological Services Field Office, 2321 W. Royal Palm Rd., Ste 103, Phoenix, AZ 85021.

At their October meeting, the SJV Management Board approved a plan for the SJV to offer a naturalist guide training for Mexicans, to be held in Sonora, Mexico. The training is tentatively scheduled for April 2006. To learn more, contact Jennie Duberstein.
SJV Technical Commitee meets in Tucson
The Sonoran Joint Venture Technical Committee met in Tucson from 27-29 October. Participants continued work on the SJV Conservation Plan and discussed the development of the SJV Monitoring Plan, as well as learned about the efforts of SJV partners in the conservation of Gull-billed Tern, Gould's Wild Turkey, and Masked Bobwhite.

Upcoming grant deadlines
- EPA Environmental Education Grants. Recipients of these grants will further EPA's strategic goals by implementing environmental education projects that improve environmental behavior through nonregulatory means, raise the public's awareness of actions it can take to prevent pollution, and promote environmental stewardship. Environmental Stewardship is defined for environmental education purposes as: voluntary commitment, behavior, and accomplishments that result in environmental protection or improvement. Stewardship refers to an acceptance of personal responsibility for actions to improve environmental quality and to achieve sustainable outcomes. Proposal deadline: 23 November 2005.
- Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act. We are pleased to announce the 2006 Request for Proposals under the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act. The Act establishes a matching grants program to fund projects that promote the conservation of these birds in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Projects may include activities to benefit bird populations and their habitats, research and monitoring, law enforcement, and outreach and education. All grant requests must be matched by partner funds at least 3:1. Partner funds from a U.S. federal source may be involved in the project, but are not eligible as match. Proposal deadline: 1 December 2005.
- Tourism Cares For Tomorrow. As part of its mission, Tourism Cares for Tomorrow distributes charitable grants to worthy nonprofit organizations worldwide for conservation or preservation. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $20,000 and will be considered for either capital improvements or appropriate programs. Proposal deadline: 1 December 2005.
- Acres for America. Acres for America is a partnership between Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Acres for America program was established to provide funding for projects that conserve important habitat for fish, wildlife, and plants through acquisition of interest in real property. The goal of the Acres for America program is to offset the footprint of Wal-Mart's domestic facilities on at least an acre by acre basis through these acquisitions. Applicants are urged to contact the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation regional director in their area to discuss project ideas prior to submitting preproposals. Check the program website for proposal deadlines.
News and Headlines
Note: As you may have noticed, this month's News and Headlines section is a little slim. Please contact Jennie Duberstein with any publicity or press that your organization or project receives or information about newspaper and journal articles of relevance to SJV partners.
