Baja Wetlands Workshop resounding success
The 8th Workshop on the Conservation of Wetlands in Mexico was held from 29 January - 13 February 2006. Over thirty biologists participated in the workshop and learned about the importance of wetlands and wetland conservation in Mexico, particularly as they relate to migratory birds. The majority of participants were from the La Paz area, although participants came from as far away as Mexico City.
In addition to helping to sponsor this important workshop, SJV staff gave a talk at the World Wetlands Day celebration on 2 February, where the audience included the governor of the State of Baja California Sur. The SJV also gave a three-hour workshop introducing participants to bird observation and identification.
The workshop organizer, Francisco Abarca, International/Borderland Projects Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, was honored with a National Wetlands Conservation Award. Abarca has organized this workshop since its inception eight years ago.
The 9th wetlands workshop will be held in Tabasco in 2007. For more information, contact Francisco Abarca.

Asilomar proceedings published
We are pleased to announce the publication of the Asilomar proceedings –
“Bird Conservation Implementation and Integration in the Americas:
Proceedings of the Third International Partners in Flight Conference,”
edited by C. John Ralph and Terrell D. Rich.
This 2-volume publication covers a broad array of subjects, including management planning, conservation, educational outreach programs, ornithological research, research methodologies, along with the some of the newest technologies for research and dissemination of information. It is available in hard copy and CD from Richard Schneider, Rocky Mountain Research Station, 240 West Prospect Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526-2098. It is also accessible online.

- North American Wetlands Conservation Act Program
Deadline: 28 July 2006 (US Standard Grants); July 2006 (Mexico Standard Grants)
Description: The North American Wetlands Conservation Act provides matching grants to private or public organizations or to individuals who have developed partnerships to carry out wetlands conservation projects in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The program provides US, Mexican, and Canadian Standard Grants (between $50,000 and $1,000,000) and US Small Grants (up to $50,000). Be sure to check out the Playa Lakes Joint Venture's Timeline for preparing a NAWCA Proposal. Important note: Anyone considering applying should coordinate their application with SJV Coordinator Robert Mesta (520-882-0047). The SJV will need to be involved not only to provide guidance but also because we will need to rank all applications that are submitted. - Acres for America
Deadline: 1 April and 1 June 2006.
Description: Acres for America is a partnership between Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Acres for America program was established to provide funding for projects that conserve important habitat for fish, wildlife, and plants through acquisition of interest in real property. The goal of the Acres for America program is to offset the footprint of Wal-Mart's domestic facilities on at least an acre by acre basis through these acquisitions. Applicants are urged to contact the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation regional director in their area to discuss project ideas prior to submitting preproposals. - Wilburforce Foundation
