Join the Friends of the San Pedro River, the Sonoran Joint Venture, the Bureau of Land Managment, the Coronado National Forest, and many other groups for guided walks, talks, and activities for people of all ages, and much more!

San Pedro River IMBD Spring Festival Itinerary (subject to change)

Bird walk

Led by Alan Blixt and Glenn Frederick

Join Friends of the San Pedro River docent and Coronado National Forest wildlife biologist for a morning bird walk along the river.

7-9am
Wildlife tracking walk
Led by Janice Pryzbyl
Join staff from the Sky Island Alliance to learn how to identify mammal and other wildlife tracks along the San Pedro River.

8-10am

Beginning bird and nature walk

Led by Sandy Kunzer and Jane Chambers

Join Friends of the San Pedro River docents for a leisurely bird and nature walk along the river.

8-9am
Plein air painting
Come observe painters capturing scenes from nature! Artists will be set up around the San Pedro House.

8-10:45am

Beaver hike

Led by Mike Foster and Ted Mouras

Be sure to wear good hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, suncreen, and a hat, and be prepared for warm temperatures. This hike is not appropriate for small children.

9-10am
Landscaping with Native Plants
Master Gardener Jan Groth will demonstrate not only how attractive xeriscape plants are but also how they: 1) attract specific wildlife species; 2) save water; and 3) are low maintenance--a win-win-win for the garden. Plants will be for sale following her talk.

Cost Effective Solar Applications

Join the owner of Tucson's The Solar Store to learn cost-effective techniques for taking advantage of Arizona's sunny climate to bring solar energy into your life!

10:30-1:30
30-Minute Family Birding Forays
Led by Glenn Frederick

Glenn Frederick from the Coronado National Forest will lead short walks around the San Pedro House for familiesto view birds and other wildlife. Walks will leave at 10:30, 11:30, and 1:30 and will last approximately 30 minutes. Binoculars will be provided.

Exhibits, native plant sale, live animal displays

Birdland Ranch, Cochise County Master Gardeners/Plant Sale, Coronado National Forest, Coronado National Memorial, Friends of the San Pedro River, Gray Hawk Nature Center, Huachuca Audubon Society Liberty Wildlife, Sky Island Alliance, Sonoran Joint Venture, UA Cooperative Extension Waterwise Program, USDA Onionweed Control Program, Wild Birds Unlimited

Visit information tables hosted by a variety of conservation, education, and outreach groups doing work in the area, purchase native plants for your garden, and see live exhibits of rehabilitated birds from Liberty Wildlife and captive reptiles from Gray Hawk Nature Center.

11am-12pm

Celebrate Birds in Culture: The Importance of Birds to Native Americans

Robert Mesta

Tusconan Robert Mesta is an ornithologist and member of the Yaqui tribe who has spent his entire professional career working to protect, conserve, and recover endangered North American Bird populations. Robert currently coordinates the Sonoran Joint Venture and is the award-winning author of the children's book, Condor: Spirit of the Canyon.

Pizza and drinks with a donation to Friends of the San Pedro River; live old time/bluegrass music.

1-3pm
Nest box building workshop
Taught by Kate Scott/Birdland Ranch
Come join us for this workshop (geared towards kids, but fun for adults, too), where you'll build a nest box that will help provide habitat for birds at the San Pedro House or in your own yard. Bring a philips head screwdriver if you have one!

4-6pm

Hummingbird banding

Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory

Get a close-up look at hummingbirds as SABO staff and volunteers capture, band, measure, and release these tiny travelers as part of long-term studies of the bird life of the internationally important migration route of the San Pedro River.
